Emergency PlumbingA burst pipe can release hundreds of gallons of water in minutes. In Oklahoma, most burst pipes happen during hard freezes — but they can also occur from corrosion, excessive water pressure, or age. Whether it's water dripping from your ceiling or a geyser in your utility room, the steps you take in the first hour determine whether you're dealing with a $500 repair or a $15,000 remediation project.
This is your emergency action guide. Follow it in order.
Your main shutoff valve is the single most important thing to find right now. It's typically located where the water line enters your home — often in the basement, crawl space, garage, or utility room. Turn it clockwise (righty-tighty) until it stops. In Ponca City, your shutoff may also be outside near the street meter — you'll need a meter key or pliers. Find your shutoff before an emergency happens.
After shutting off the water supply, turn off your water heater. Gas heaters: set to "Pilot." Electric heaters: flip the circuit breaker. Without water supply, the heating element can burn out if the heater keeps running with an empty or low tank.
Even after the main is shut off, there's still pressurized water in your pipes. Open cold-water faucets in multiple rooms to drain the system and relieve the pressure. This stops additional water from flowing from the broken section of pipe.
Water and electricity are a life-threatening combination. If water is near outlets, light fixtures, or your electrical panel, turn off the circuit breakers for those areas before entering the room. If you're unsure, turn off the main breaker and use a flashlight.
With the water off and electricity secured, call a licensed emergency plumber. Drain Doctor Plumbing provides 24/7 emergency plumbing service in Ponca City and surrounding areas. Call 580-304-9653 now.
Take photos and video of all water damage before any cleanup begins. This documentation is critical for your homeowner's insurance claim. Photograph the broken pipe, affected walls, flooring, belongings — everything. Do this while you're waiting for the plumber.
Oklahoma temperatures can plunge below 0°F with little warning. When water in a pipe freezes, it expands with enormous force — enough to split steel or copper pipe. The burst doesn't always happen where the pipe is frozen; it happens where the pressure has nowhere to go. Read our full winter guide: How to Prevent Frozen Pipes This Winter in Oklahoma.
Galvanized steel pipes — common in Ponca City homes built before 1980 — corrode from the inside out over decades. When the pipe wall gets thin enough, even normal water pressure causes failure. If your home has original galvanized plumbing and is more than 40 years old, a plumbing inspection is strongly recommended before a failure occurs.
Normal residential water pressure is 40–80 PSI. Pressure above 80 PSI stresses pipe joints, fittings, and appliance connections. You can buy a pressure gauge at any hardware store ($15–$25) and test your pressure at an outdoor hose bib. If it's over 80 PSI, have a plumber install a pressure reducing valve (PRV) — a $150–$400 investment that protects your entire plumbing system.
